I know quite a few people who have gotten their $500 paint job.
It's pretty hit or miss - and it's exterior only. If you are going with a different color, I advise against it, because you won't get your engine bay, door seals etc done.
Like I said, though - hit or miss. One had awful orange peel, yet the other one looked like a badass, brand new paint job. It all depends on the specific shop, I suppose.

I'm sure if I told them I wanted the door jams painted they would do it. I wouldn't mind spending a few extra bucks for that. I hope more people reply to this because I'm on the edge of doing it

There's more than just the door jams... there's the engine bay, door sils, the bottom of your hood, inside of gas cap, and not to mention the pieces behind plastic pieces (fender liners, etc)
I doubt it would be "just a few more bucks" - simply because painting that stuff requires a LOT more prep work to avoid getting it on the interior.

I always heard with them it was better f you did the prep work yourself. The old adage is... you get what you pay for. Ultimately your decision.

I had my 2001 painted by maaco about 3 years ago. It still looks good however i am starting to get a little rust back around a wheelwell and on the passenger door that they fixed. I got their most expensive paintjob at the time, a bc/cc to match the original color, with there more expensive prep and it does look as good as a factory paintjob imo. It ran me about $1500. I have noticed that the clearcoat tends to chip and scratch very easily. Its not "perfect" as they missed a little by the license plate light and other little things, but nothing noticeable. They said the paint wouldnt stick to the doorhandles and mirrors for whatever reason so they didnt paint them. Overall I would recommend them if your car looks like crap and needs paint. but i wouldnt if you wanted to change the color or something because they charge extra for the extra body work, $150 a doorsill if i remember right. Also they are independently owned so one shop may not be as good as another, I would try to see what other people have to say about the one you are going to. Also talk to the manager, tell him what you expect to be pleased with the paintjob and what he recommends, and ask to see some of the cars they just completed at the shop. Mine was done in Albany, NY and i can say that they do an acceptable job for the price. Sorry about the incoherent post, Ill clean it up later and try to find a pic that shows the depth of the the paint, but here are a couple I posted before. imagehost.auroraclubna.com/images/picture0051.jpgimagehost.auroraclubna.com/images/picture0061.jpg-KP12b

In all honesty I would avoid them unless you are going to drop the money for their top of the base/clear. And just as the other guy above posted it hasn't lasted.

Just to be clear, I am very happy with the paint. Sure its not perfect, but to get it done right you would be paying more in paint than what the car is worth and no one is going to see a difference except for yourself when you wash and wax it. The clearcoat on my car was peeling all over from previous body work and there was rust so it was an easy choice for me. It has honestly held up better than i expected it to as the rust is just starting to come back(little bumps in the paint). In my opinion its like 90% of the paintjob for 50% of the price, although im sure some people here would disagree with that.

Basically what I'm hearing is, for the extremely low cost, a couple of hundred bucks compared to a couple of thousand bucks, it's an awesome deal, correct? I'm not looking for top of the line professional grade. Just want something that looks better than it does now. Because right now it looks like crap

I wouldn't pay some jack for an enamel paint job if you are doing the budget paint. Prep/Base/clear or forget it. And if they won;t paint the door handles or mirrors like I said what a joke. PASS. At least I would. Save your money and have a credible local shop paint it. Just my opinion.

So there paint won't stick to plastic... Hmmm how did they do the front and rear fascias then lol. Plastic requires special prep. Which means repaints involve stripping off all the paint if it has chips, because it needs a special primer to make the paint stick.

I know this. I paint plenty of plastic pieces. But by this logic they cannot possibly be able to paint the front and rear fascia then.
You get what you pay for. I will leave it at that.

In their defense they did a decent job matching the paint and it isn't really noticeable haha. I forgot to have them do the license plate cover so that's the original paint. Did anyone notice?

I am an automotive spray painter. Consider this. When I restored my cars, the paint and materials would easily cost me $2000-$3000. So what do you expect from a $500 paint job? I would rather have my car go unpainted than to put a Maaco or other chain store paint job on my cars.
The only way to get a paint job done right is to completely disassemble your car. It should basically be a body on a rolling chassis with doors and lids off. All rubber removed, all trim removed, and the bumpers off.

I have had good maaco results after doing my own collision repair and paint prep work. If you are willing to do the prep- or at least removal and masking of pieces- then it can turn out pretty decent on a driver. Not my first choice for a toy or show car.
