Hello everyone I decided to write small “how to”replace an air pump maybe this information will be useful for someone. First you have to put the car on jack of cause and remove the driver side wheel. Than remove the retainers. Remove the shield. And then you will see the Famous Air pump. There is 3 screws holding the pump 2 on the bottom and 1 on top behind the pump(witch can be a PITA to unscrew the top one) New and old pump Then you install new pump. Make sure you put zip ties on both side of the pump. Other important part make sure you fit the snorkel good in to that hole in the fender. Then you have to turn the hose right way since the hose made for Cadi so it turned wrong direction what I did removed the metal rings and put zip ties. New pump in the car. Hope it helps.

What are the zip ties on the pump itself for?

To hold top part with the bottom part it has its own clips but they suck so the bottom part will get lose after a while and let water in.you can see old pump on pic # 3 and u can see how its getting apart.

I'm not getting any codes but my pump is noisy. If there's more than one source is one any better than the others? I seem to recall some posts long ways back about a better quality pump.
On my first Aurora I had the pump and both valves replaced but the new one only lasted 6 months before whining again.

Do you guys NEED this for emissions(inspections/testing)? If not why not just have madtuner work his magic and get rid of the code if new pumps only last 6 months? Just throwing that out there!

If one is able to delete/work around the air pump like for example deleting the EGR valve or running no/gutted cat then madtuner should be able to 'tune' the PCM to not throw the air pump code(s) just as one can for EGR and gutted cat. As if it were never there.
I'm not sure it is possible but something to consider looking in to.

I'd miss the sound of mine "spooling up" in the morning, lol! I know it's on the way out, but saving the tune for the 4.6 swap.

Ok finally got around to ordering an air pump. found one on eBay for $75 shipped from a Eldo w/ 53k. has a 30 or 60 day warranty. Yes i might miss it sounding like a turbine engine on cold star up, but now i'll be able to actually enjoy the sound of my exhaust instead! I'll try to take some picks, but paulaurora did such a good job with his howto, i'll just thank him instead! Thanks Paul!

alright, so it wasnt the air pump that was bad, it was the plastic tube that was bad. It had a hole in it which made it suck air! So now i have an air pump for sale if anyone is interested!

what i thought was the air pump, might have been a hole in the hose sucking in air on cold starts

Thanks again Paul, I’m gonna try to zip tie that end cup-cover peice and see if that’ll fix the check engine code trip. If not then the pumps gone probably bad by sucking in water then I’ll just replace the whole unit.. did u replace the whole unit as well or just the pump? I’ve read that the original had defects and the new replacement part offered by standard has the updated piping with it. www.partsgeek.com/587wxs1-oldsmobile-aurora-secondary-air-injection-pump.html

the pump is same unit made by Bosch. but the hose that comes with snorkel is that what different. To make sure that no water gets in. You still need zip tie the bottom part to the pump well since clips for it very bad and will end up in same boat later.

to note: some 2001-2002/3 auroras will have codes for Secondary AIR components and they may be erroneous
I forget the reasoning or what specifcially but I believe EGR codes may be present too... basically.. if you are facing the issue, make sure your PCM is up to date (there is a TSB about this)
