Yeah, those old Toronados have a special place in my heart. I remember I always loved it when Dad got one as a company car. It's the only two-door car I've ever seen that had an auxiliary door handle accessible to the rear seat passenger. That was a touch I really appreciated, even as a five-year-old. One funny memory I have of a Toronado was riding in one when I had chickenpox. Mom was running errands and stopped at a friend's house for a few minutes and left me in the car, so I amused myself by examining all the new and cool features, especially the 8-track tape player, which I had never seen before. It was a factory-installed under-dash unit. The only tape in the car was the demo tape that came with the car. I remember it had "Cherish" by The Association on it and "If You Could Read My Mind" by Gordon Lightfoot. I still like both of those songs today. Dad had just gotten the car a few days before and I was really curious about this new gizmo called a tape player. I only knew "tape" to come in two varieties--Scotch and masking--so I had no clue how it worked. I had never seen the tape cartridge actually out of the player, so I assumed it was actually part of the car, even though it felt kind of loose. It didn't take me too long before I had pulled the tape out of its slot and I truly thought I'd broken the car! This was a real horror scenario because Dad was uber anal about all of our cars, but especially his company cars. I quickly shoved the tape back into the slot, still convinced I'd broken it, and was amazed and relieved when Mom started up the car a few minutes later and "Cherish" picked up right where it had left off. I really felt like I'd dodged a bullet that day. My other favorite Oldsmobile is the one pictured in my signature below. The "Golden Rocket" was a one-off concept car created for GM's 1956 Motorama exhibition. I've always been captivated by its lines ever since I first saw it in a book called Oldsmobile: The First 75 Years, which was put out by the publishers of Automobile Quarterly magazine back in 1972. I'm not sure the car actually even had an engine as many of those cars were "pushmobiles". Sadly, like most of those Motorama cars, it was scrapped after its run on the show circuit was done. One of its design features did show up on production GM cars in the '70s--one-piece swivel bucket seats. The reappeared in the 1969 Cutlass 442 "Apollo" concept car, which also had bucket seats in the back, a feature that finally saw production on the W-body Cutlass Supreme convertibles in the mid-'90s. Here's a link to some images of that car: www.carstyling.ru/resources/concept/69oldsmobile_apollo_3.jpgDaily Driver: 2011 Impala LT Weekend Toy: 1995 Aurora

I had a lot of good times with my 1973 Cutlass. Was a great car, had a 307, 200-4R, limited-slip 3.42. Altough all the drivetrain was not original, It's the pure lines of that made it for me, before the big bumpers, with a long hood/ short tail, sculpted sides, etc. I also have a soft spot for these large 1978/9 diesel-powered 2-door Oldsmobiles... but that's sort of a sad story

I loved the 1971 442 Convertible so I bought one back in 1982 and still own to this day. 1977 442 would be #2 choice, 1966 Toro #3, 1967 442 #4,

For a while I subscribed to "Journey With Olds" the monthly magazine from the Oldsmobile Club of America. I got to see lots of photos of Oldsmobiles. From that background I'd like to report on my favorite Oldsmobiles per decade based on the sheet metal only:
1940's: 1948 Olds 98 convertible 1950's: 1956 Olds 98 Holiday 4-door hardtop 1960's: 1962 Starfire 1970's: 1973 442 1980's: No favorite as far as the sheet metal. All too ugly, for way too long. What were we thinking??? 1990's: 1995 Aurora 2000's: 2001 Aurora All time favorite sheet metal: 1966 Toronado

I have to agree for the most part, although there are a couple of honorable mentions, including the Cutlass Calais coupe (1985-1991), Toronado (1987-1992), and Cutlass Supreme coupe (1988-1997).
