So all of a sudden (no whining or anything, it was very weird) while driving home from work the power steering takes a dump on me. I know it's not the belt because I was still charging at 15.0 volts. Get home and get out to get some fluid as the reservoir appears bone dry.
Dump the fluid in and it doesn't fill, just seems to eat it. Looking under the car, it all appears to have pissed out the driver's side of the car near the tie rod end. It's parked on snow so I can't get a good look at it. Think I'm looking at a line or possibly a rack?

Sounds like a rack, but you won't know until you get a better look at it. I just replaced the rack on my '97, it was quite the gusher.

Well that's simply awesome. Took it on a 600 mile road trip this past weekend, at least it didn't fail then.
I'm hoping it's the low pressure line so I can simply toss some hose on it and drive off. Ugh. It's just that there's snow on the ground and I haven't had 10 minutes on a clear piece of ground to get a look at it closely -- it's -10 outside right now.

most common issue is the high pressure line but can be rack too.

Found out what happened. The dork who replaced my control arm on the drivers side thought it'd be a swell idea to run the PS line directly under the CV joint right off the transmission. Each time the car hit a bump it would hit the joint and eventually wore a hole. I'm livid but they will fix it.
