This pop is coming from the engine I assume. Does it do it every time you start it?

random thought: could be a leaky injector loading up a cylinder with gas while engine is off

Hi, just as a side note, my 1995 1st gen (198,000) miles does the same thing. Not every time, a single pop and only once in awhile. With mine, if the engine has been running and warmed up, if I shut it off and try to restart too quickly it will backfire and make a little muffled pop. I surmise that since these are pretty high compression engines any fuel leftover in a cylinder needs very little to make it 'diesel' or ignite on its' own. If the previous owner did allot of stop and go driving there may be some excess carbon in the cylinder or on the top of the piston. I find an "Italian tune up" helps mitigate this problem for me. These engines were developed for hard use and if you don't put your foot in it every now and then they tend to carbon up. It seems counter intuitive to 'abuse' an engine but these are a very different breed of car. . . one reason why they are often misunderstood. Other places to look if the popping gets worse or just really bothers you would be fuel metering and or ecu problems. Oh, and don't touch the gas pedal just turn the key and wait for her to catch. It might be worth stopping by Autozone and have them check for codes. Just a thought.

Aren't these engines wasted spark ignition? If so, then the occasional " pop " through the intake is entirely normal.

My 99 did the same thing for years, then once the fuel pump died i replaced it and the early morning pop was gone. i googled it and this happens when the pump is weak and you get a lean condition and dreaded pop. change your filter and pump and i'm sure your issue will be solved. Attachments:

Oddly, I've never heard of this issue before. I like bobsblue95 guess - and would further add that maybe the FPR needs adjustment. The torkx screw /allen wrench nut in the center of the FPR is an adjustment. Try marking or scribe a line on the screw head so you'll know where it was originally, then clockwise & counter-clock that screw and see if it helps. They are a cheap part to replace in the worst case. I'll second the "Italian Tune" (great description!) Grandpa driving starves the exhaust cams of lube. They only get a back splash of oil under normal throttle. It is highly recommended to frog your Aurora every chance you get!
