I own a 1996 Oldsmobile Aurora. I do most of the repairs myself if I can. I have a few issues I'm not sure how to deal with. 1. I have a very faint gas smell when idling for more than 10 minutes. 2. I feel like I'm losing gas mileage. Gage goes all the way past full. Computer says it's gas mileage is on target but the odo never seems to add up. 3. I have a crack in my rear valve cover and am unable to find a replacement and need advise on how to deal it.
Ty in advance for any tips and advise.

Valve cover: worst come to worst I would use JB Weld on the crack. Maybe some of that exhaust tape and JB if it were a gaping hole.
If you do the math what kind of fuel economy do you get?
My nose is not very good. I may mistake gas and oil odors, maybe.

The gauge will go past the full mark if it's filled to the pump shut off, completely normal. If you think you might be losing fuel I'd inspect the fuel pump opening on top of the tank (there's an access cover under the carpet in the trunk) and inspect your fuel lines. As far as the valve cover, your best bet with that would be to get one from a salvage yard. Any '95-'99 4.6 Cadillac Northstar cover should fit (it may be slightly different on the outside though) or obviously one off of a '95-'99 Aurora. The big question is, what does your fuel rail look like at the engine. Have you had the recall done? Is it stainless steel? Please checkout this link and make sure yours is swapped : aurorah.proboards.com/thread/21704

The computer says I'm getting 17miles combined. And yes my fuel rail is stainless still. We also had the vin number checked so it's all good there. And I will try the JB Weld. Ty

We just noticed tonight the famed rotten egg smell. Which will account for gas mileage mess up too

What type of JB Weld should I use? Any JB weld will do OK. You have to clean the surfaces where you will put the glue thoroughly. BTW, I think that there is also a JB weld for high temperature use. Check that at www.jbweld.com

Do not use JB Weld. Valve covers are not hard to find or change.

Do not use JB Weld. Valve covers are not hard to find or change. The valve covers for my car are no longer made. I cannot find any in a salvage yard within a 150 mile radius, any parts store and the dealer cannot find it either.

I find it hard to believe there is zero Cadillacs with Northstar motors within 150 miles in a salvage yard... Auroras possibly but not Cadillacs. Try car-part.com or we can try to summon Randy T. , but I doubt he will appear.

95-99 Cadillac Northstar 4.6. So any Eldorado, Deville, STS, etc. It should fit, but I can't say for sure whether the outside of it (pcv hose location, mounting holes for coil packs etc) will be the same.

My nose is not very good. I may mistake gas and oil odors, maybe. Please understand I am making up a possible "Fix" as I was typing. Keeping the JB out of your valve train is job 1 if this is the way you are going. Also don't JB Weld your valvecover to your motor. Clean it around the crack. Put some kind of metalic type tape over the crack. Put JB Weld over that would be my order of operation. They're right. Compare some pics of Caddy valve covers and yours then make an educated guess as to what fits. A few of my friends including one who ran a used car lot, love that car-parts.com site. Honestly I repaired a bad trunk shock mount and leak into my spare tire well in one fix with JB Weld so I have used the product. Just be careful and don't make anything worse.
