My 2001 4.0 with 242k recently started to not display miles and trip info. Sometimes just tapping the screen at different points will cause it to light but after turning off the ignition it’s out again. The odometer continues to function but without any visual. As I’m not handy with mechanics where should I go for the fix. Any suggestions?

The odometer/tripometer display is soldered to the gauge cluster circuit board. And from what I've read, the solder joints that provide power to illuminate the display have a tendency to become "loose". That's why tapping the cluster will revive it for a while. It can be repaired, if you're willing to tear into the dash to pull the gauge cluster. And then willing to tear into the cluster to re-solder the broken joints. It sounds worse than it actually is, but not by much, lol! Otherwise, you can try a dealer ($$$ and I'm not even sure the cluster is still available). Or buy a used cluster online and pay an independent shop to do the swap. Or buy online and DIY... FWIW, If you go (have to go) used, the mileage follows the cluster. This can be corrected, of course, at the dealership.

Wow I didnt realize anyone did that job. It's also a really good price. If I were ever to need that I would check it out myself.
