It's called a resonator or some such, supposedly it reduces air intake noise. You can ditch it, just plug the hole in the intake tube after you do...
The belt is for the water pump. Welcome to the 4.0! Haha!

Yep that's right, resonator. Useless...but I leave it on. And yep again, waterpump is on the back of the motor driven off of one of the cams.

Yep 2g V8 has same belt for water pump as well

Interesting. Not a bad idea to have water pump, arguably the most important accessory, on it's own belt.. if main belt goes you can still drive on battery power to limp home.. assuming you keep up on water pump belt. Is there something to plug the hole? I dont need a box in my way and intake noise would be negligible.
