I need one and I am so cheap id join a forum to find out if theres any possible cheaper one then 125$ on eBay. I didnt work on my car my best friend did it was over heating. Something about water cooler maybe the word pump was involved. Well it seized up. He took it apart wrong is what I was told and somehow we need a new left intake camshaft. What about that North Star camshaft are they different?
Im broke not cheap actually. And I do love my oldsmobile. I'm the second owner. She was perfect when I got her and I just feel bad for the poor thing now. I kept a 2-5 year old in her with Cheetos n cheeseburgers smushed into her seats. And clearly the last owners had a garage. I have Washington state tree sap all over her and moss keeps trying to grow on it.
I just wanna know if theres a cheaper option? Like is ther another GM that has the same left intake camshaft? Thanks

Best option is a salvage yard. I do believe that the cams are exclusive to this engine. $125 is fairly inexpensive, you won't find it new. I think the Shelby modified engines had intake cams from the 4.6 northstar, so it might work but you would have to swap both sides at a minimum, maybe need some tuning for the PCM.
Regardless, if the car is overheating and the engine seized I would guess that there is a strong possibility you have a blown headgasket and coolant in the oil.

The biggest change to the Shelby 4.0 motors was supposed to be cams from a 4.6. If they're already the same cam then....

The biggest change to the Shelby 4.0 motors was supposed to be cams from a 4.6... Yes, that's what I've always heard/read. Don't forget, there were two versions of the 4.6. I would think that Shelby used the cams from a L37 (VIN 9) motor. It was rated at 300HP, while the LD8 (VIN Y) only had 275. I think all the cars on the fitment list are LD8s... The L37s were generally reserved for STS, DTS, etc.

Excellent point. The 300hp motor is what they used the cams from as far as I know

I wonder if that means the only difference between the 4.6 variants is the cams?

That depends on the year, haha!
I've read the L37 had beefier valve springs early on. Somewhere around '95 both motors got the same springs, making the intake cams the only difference. In 2000, they had different exhaust cams as well.
But yeah, the cams are the only physical difference...
