I'm in the process of ordering adapters so I can install my Kenwood carplay receiver into my Aurora. I have the factory Bose system and I want to retain the the steering wheel controls and possibly add more functionality to button presses like hold the Seek button for previous track, etc. Crutchfield says I need the PAC RP3-GM13 and the PAC SWI-CP2. It also states that you must cut into the factory wiring to retain SWC. What's all that involve? I'm not new to car stereo installation but I've never had to splice into the factory radio harness to get done what I wanted.

Yeah, mine I had to cut into the harness. Mine is a 98. I installed an aftermarket h/u and made my controls control volume and mute the head unit. I'm not sure if you could program the controls to do more on the carplay. With the PAC adapters you can program the button to do whatever is compatible with the headunit. It has also been about 6 years since I programmed mine so the process of that is a little foggy in my head haha.

What year is your aurora ? Sorry it's a 2001. I've done some more research and decided to go with an Axxess GMOS-09 and Axxess ASWC-1. Those seem fairly straight forward. I guess the main question in my head is how do you access the harness as isn't a dock style connector? Does it pull right out?

For 2001 you do need to cut in to the wires that right next to the steering wheel since the 2001 has a data cable style connector not regular wires like -2003 or 95-99. The connector is removable with the antenna connector you need to buy WV antenna adapter. Other thing make sure when you attach the adapter with the main car radio conector use zip ties since they dont click in together and after a while it might disconnect.

I got the main harness today but am still waiting for the steering wheel control harness. I got my radio installed and everything works great. I’m worried about doing the steering wheel harness how ever. How do you even go about it? Do you need to take the steering wheel apart and run wires to it? Is it possible to tap into the aftermarket harness before it reaches the data connector? I doubt they’d make it that easy but I thought I’d ask.

I am not sure exactly the steps but somewhere there is harness that goes from steering wheel controls to data cable. As i read everywhere you can't tap in to aftermarket harness. When I had my 2001 I never install steering wheel controls. I did install on my 2003 but it had reg wires not a data type cable.

Well I got everything working. Not wanting to mess with that data cable I decided to try and tap into the aftermarket harness of the GMOS-09 and it works. I simply added a posi tap to the pink wire and connected it there. I had to manually update the ASWC on my PC and there was definitely a moment there where I thought I was going to have to dig into the dash but alas that was not case. Volume controls work, seek and prog buttons work and I even have them dual assigned so I now have mute and previous track buttons on the steering wheel. Thanks for the input to all who responded.
