It's possible that the no heat problem can be taken care of by flushing the heater core.

Probably. Ever try to take the squeeze clamps off from their position buried in the firewall? There's an expensive special tool for that. I couldn't do it. Neither could the mechanic I took it to.
Some engineer needs to hang for ALL the stupidity of the heater core placement.

Those are ordinary hose clamp pliers. There isn't enough room for the jaws to open. The tool I refer to is a long tube with narrow jaws at one end and a hex nut you turn with a socket at the other. The mechanism is internal.
No matter. Like every other car I've owned, it's the rust that causes me to give up.
