I found a great radio in the parts yard for $40 and I'd like to swap it in to my 2001 for cosmetic reasons. Of course, the security locks up the radio, and the local locksmith want $80 to unlock it with a Tech 2 scan tool.
As We Know, these particular radios will not generate a numeric code that I can use to call the GM phone number to get an unlock code on my own.
And I see fools on YouTube mutilating the eprom chip to get them to play but it will no longer memorize preset stations and you lose everything the moment you shut off your car.
I am thinking I could easily just transfer the eprom chip from my old radio, which is programmed to my vehicle VIN, to the new radio and everything should work?
Has anybody tried this and if I don't feel like soldering it would seem I could simply swap the entire circuit board from the old one?
Do any of you have any thoughts on this strategy? Thanks, Greg

In my case me too, got a immaculate good looking Stereo of the Junkyard and couldn't Unlock it, So I just Swapped out the complete face and install it on my existing radio of my AURORA. Just a couple screws and Hardness clips, done in Half Hour. Now it plays and looks good as it sounds...

Make sure that you getting correct radio for your car. 2001 radio will not work with 2002 and 2003 cars and vise versa . if you have none bose than you need to get same . When i put 2001 radio in 2002 - 2003 Aurora and used my Tech2 to unlock it will unlock the radio but than Speedometer wouldn't work and vise versa. It takes like 2 sek to unlock with tech2

I sure hope Santa brings me a Tech 2 scanner for Christmas. What's the cheapest one you can buy that would unlock a radio? Any suggestions?

I swapped the faceplate of the new radio but kept the guts of the old radio, and now everything works fine, looks better, and the face is now fully illuminated at night. Victory! And I didn't have to pay $80 or more to have someone turn off the Theftlock on the radio I only paid $40 for. Thanks for your help, everyone! Greg "Dr K"
