MARLBOROUGH, N.Y. — A state police chase late Friday ended with a car submerged in a murky pond and the driver facing 50 tickets, state police said Monday.
At about 11:40 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, a trooper from the Montgomery barracks saw a 2014 Cadillac traveling north on U.S. Route 9W in the town of Newburgh that was in violation of numerous vehicle and traffic laws, according to a press release.
The driver, Melissa D. Branagan, 38, of Newburgh, failed to stop for the trooper and fled in the vehicle, police said. The chase ended when the Cadillac drove into a pond on Marchese Drive.
Branagan, the sole occupant of the car, was unable to get out when the vehicle began to sink, police said. The trooper went into the water and was able to remove her from the vehicle through the driver-side window and then swim back to shore with her, police said.
Branagan, who police said was driving while intoxicated, refused medical attention. She was issued 50 tickets, including the felonies of driving while intoxicated and driving while ability impaired by drugs and aggravated unlicensed driving, and the misdemeanor of fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle. Branagan was released with tickets for Newburgh Town Court on Oct. 16.
