Looking for recommendations on a high end head unit to put in my classic, but I've been out of it for years, anyone have good brand recommendations and those to stay away from? I was thinking of checking out Alpine, Blaupunkt, Kenwood, Pioneer-any other suggestions?
This system will probably have 3 amps or more + a set of subs in the trunk, looking for a really good head unit that does MP3s, line level input for my XM unit, great fm AND am reception.
Thanks all!
Sid

Alpine's are the best I've had. I would say Kenwood and Alpine's are the best. Blaupunkt isnt really a good unit. Stay away from JVC, anything that is really cheap.

I had Kenwood e Xcelon units and just recently bought an /////Alpine head unit 9855. I would say for the Classic Aurora the Alpine CDA-7998 is super nice, it has a ton of features. Last year when this model came out it was $800.00, now you can find it for almost half of that. It has a cool feature the "FantomFace XL" This is the one that I have Alpine CDA-9855

Thanks guys!! I've been a diehard Kenwood fan for many years, but don't like the new 'floppy face' fronts that are on them. Not the revolving, have an 811 in the Bonneville, but the ones that hang down. Thanks for the Alpine tip!

Since my competition days I have tried various head units -- Clarion, Alpine, Rockford, Eclipse, and currently Pioneer. If you are going with XM I would choose a head unit that is setup for it rather than an "add-on" unit that plays throug your FM receiver.
My 1996 Classic setup includes the Pioneer AVH-P6500DVD unit. The Pioneer signal is routed to a pair of JL Audio amplifiers -- a 300/4 and a 250/1 (subwoofer). The front stage is handled by a Diamond Hex component set and the rear fill is MB Quart coaxials. A JL W-4 in a ported box provides the low end. Equalization is handled by a pair of AudioControl EQTs. The Aurora interior for my setup had a serious drop in the bass to mid-bass frequency ranges - that is why I opted for the EQTs.

I've tried many diff combinations of components and i would say that panasonic is my favorite when I'm running subs because of the separate sub outputs on the rear and the sub controls on the head units. the ones Ive used had a front, rear and sub out put. it makes the subs sound so much better and cleaner

Javi, you have the 9855 in the 300M? When was the built date and do/did you have any problems with it? I'm looking to get one for myself and read that some of ones built in Feb. have some problems. Also, how's the scrolly thing?

This is the first time I hear of them having any problems, my 9855 is still in perfect condition.

Well, cost won out over style for the head unit, found a nice Kenwood Excelon unit (815) and CD changer package on Ebay. The Kenwood needed the ribbon cable to the faceplate replaced, which is an easy fix. Got the Kenwood + CD changer for $51, plus ordered the ribbon cable for $12.99. NOW I have to start figuring out speakers & amps.
I'm still thinking about going with the Infinity 2ohm 6 3/4 component units for the front doors. Open to suggestions for the back deck and subs. Don't want to fill up my trunk with a sub box, wondering if a 10" or 12" bandpass unit would fit OK.

I have in my garage (collecting dust) the KDC-X817 which was also a nice head unit and replaced by an Alpine 9855. Here is apicture of the 817.
