After reading a thread somewhere on oil pressure, I got curious about my car's oil pressure. So I check it this morning and found it to be at about 60 psi. I was surprised. Is the oil supposed to be the pressurized at idle? When I went to work, I observed the the pressure went to about 55 psi. Is this totaly wierd? Should I add more oil to the car? Take out some? Or am I being silly and this is very normal? What do you experts say about this?

A perfectly running warm Northstar engine idles at 5-6 PSI. At accel I have seen 20+ PSI (need to confirm that).
Safe to assume that a cold engine will have a high pressure. I posted a thread on AF stating my numbers based on a warm engine at idle/accel. I'll check today again.

Cruising at about 60mph/2000 rpm the car is at about 50-60 psi. Cruising at about 45 mph/ <1500 rpm it is at about 35 psi. I'd be concerned about 5-6 psi. It could just be a bad sender, but I'd want to find out. When my car is not warm yet, it will run anywhere from about 65 to 85 psi. Erw, your pressures will change a lot with the oil temperature. Adding/removing oil will not help (unless you remove so much the engine starves). A quality filter might help if your pressure seems low.

My 2001 4.0 starts cold at 67 - 69 lbs. When warmed up, it'll be at 12 - 15 lbs. at idle. On the highway (65 -70 mph), the DIC shows about 65 lbs. ______________ GM!!! BRING BACK OLDS!!!

Update:
My car now gets about 18 psi when at 200 degrees, about 55-60 psi when cruising.

my 95 aurora oil pressure is just like aurora40's car, but lately, after its warmed up and sitting at a red light, it drops to 0 psi and starts dinging. once i take off, its fine again. Does anyone know how to change to Oil Sending Unit? ??

Confirm that it is indeed the oil sending unit. Have you got the car scanned? Typicall O PSI oil pressure relates to something more sinister.
I assume a sending unit would produce an error code in the cars computer.

well last night i changed the oil pressure unit and still no luck.. same problem. The service engine soon light was on when i started it. this light comes on periodically but autozone says it must be on for them to read the codes. i did manage to get it there with the light still on and they said their computer will not read aurora codes since it technically isn't obd2 codes. make any sense? I also replaced the thermostat and im still getting cold air. only if i punch the accelerator down hard to i feel a little bit of warm air. any suggestions?

Ah yes, you have a 95, that was the last year of the OBD1 system The heat issue may be a bad heater core. Apparently you can pull OBD1 codes with a paperclip...we need someone with a 95 to confirm the correct way to pull OBD1 codes.

it does though have an obd2 clip, i have had 1 out of 4 shops hook up a scanner and get good codes. i guess an optional cable is available for the scanner.

When I bought my 95 the oil pressure cold was always at 90 to 100 psi. I changed the sending unit and then it would be a6 60. I changed oil and the chimes went off at every stop light, I had to keep it reved. I talked to a friend that owns the local NAPA store and he said change oil filters. I had put on an Fram since that is all I could get that day. I bought a NAPA Gold from him went home and put it on. Oil pressure even when the engine is fully warm doesn't drop below 10 psi now.
