Welcome to the forum Dave.
first thing i would do is check all the grounds in the engine compartment - may as well check under the back seat too. if your car was older i may have jumped to the starter/solenoid as they can be prone to heat related issues but as its a 2001 i would look a cheaper things first.
ok ok - i always look at cheaper things first.
any other operational anomolies?

Hear the solenoid click when you try to start it? Or just silence?

When we turn the heat on , the air on the drivers side is cool and the pasengers side is warm .i I also believe that the defroster could be a whole lot warmer...dave

How many miles do you have? If you're under 60,000 you should still be under warranty. If not, maybe it's a bad ignition switch? I can't really think of anything offhand that would cause that. Does everything else electrical work o.k. when you turn it to ACC or RUN? does the DIC report anything such as "service theft system," "theft attempted," "Service Vehicle Soon?" What does the security light on the dash do as you try to start it?

Every other option works fine.Every now and again the service light comes on.I had the codes read and it tells me that the crackshaft sensor and the camshaft sensor are in need of replacement. The light will go off after fourty miles...dave

My 2003 didn't have all of your symptoms. But it did fail to start one Saturday afternoon. No starter motor response, but all the accessories worked. It turned out to be a switch or sensor that normally prevents you from energizing the starter when the motor is already running. (If you've never ground the starter while the car was already running you're a better man than me.) In my case the switch/sensor went partially bad and indicated that the engine was running when it wasn't - hence it wouldn't let me energize the starter.

If you got codes for the crank and cam sensors, I would start there. It may not be the actual sensors but the wiring or connections to them. This may or may not contribute to the no crank hot symptom but you cannot ignore the codes either.
The start relay can also prevent the solenoid from engaging.
If you are handy with a digital multimeter, you can diagnose both of these possible causes. If not, I would recommend a professional. If you are into blind part swapping and the parts are not that expensive, perhaps you just replace the crank and cam position sensors.
Edit: Also, if the tach is wacky, this screams crank position sensors or connections.

Sorry, poor word choice on my part. Ground = past tense of grind. An awful noise of metal on metal when the starter motor kicks in on a engine already turning.

my olds is 2001....76000 miles, it starts up great sometimes then other times it hesitates a few seconds then starts, but then the tachometer shoots up to like 5000 rpm, but the engine itself is purring....could the secondary pollution control pump be effecting this?

frosty, probably not, it could be crank sensors or camshaft position sensors. If the tach shoots up and the car is idling, I'd check those things first. Is your SES light on??
