Custom mine is the same way where my battery is. It is probably from people spilling their sodas or water when they sat in the back seat.

Check the battery & its vent system. That white residue usually results from battery acid leakage. __________________ GM!!! BRING BACK OLDS!!!

Like Marc said, the white seems like battery spillage/corrosion. You can clean it with a water/baking soda solution to help neutralize it, and baking soda shouldn't harm anything.

I thought the battery too but I checked it over and didn't see any evidence of the vent system being clogged, or the vent hose being kinked or broken. The battery was replaced when i bought the car as the battery just suddenly died after my test drive. I saw under the backseat at that time and there was no rust. Now, only 3 months later this is what I see. Talk about rapid rust or what?!

Mine looked similar under the seat to Custom88's. I'll see if I have a pic somewhere...

Acid spillage is common with 2nd Gen Auroras. The corrosion is mos def from the battery. Clean with a baking soda solution, then wipe very, very dry, then repeat.
