I have a 2002 4.0 and almost everytime just before the car shifts from first to second gear, it makes a high pitched, kind of a whistling noise. It is hard to describe. At times, the car noticably lurches into second gear and the noise is much more pronounced. I have had this car into the shop countless times and nothing could be found. GM even agreed to extend the warranty on the transmission up to 100k miles.
Has anyone experienced this or know what it could be? Thanks.

Check the trans oil level. Sometimes I have seen some awful trans problems caused by a low trans oil level.

Thanks for the info. I assume that those items were checked by the dealer, but I know what happens when you assume. The dealer told me that he had another 2002 Aurora in when I brought mine in and he said that other Aurora made the same sound as mine. I asked him if that meant that it was a common defect and if there would be a recall. He said no, it just seems to be what the car does. thus, I have no confidence in the service department at the dealer, but I hate like hell to pay for something that should be covered under the warranty.

Mine was the transmission fluid pump. Check your power steering pump too though.

Stupid question but have you checked belts yet? Mine was a belt that whined a little at high RPM's just before it shifts.
