What is the sound that is made right after you start up the car. It sounds like something engaging or something pumping. Sometimes when i am driving alot it does it more than once. Sort of sounds like it is coming from the left rear wheel.

Most likely the electronic load leveling pump. When the car sits, some air will invariably leak out, so it pumps it back up to the proper ride height. If it comes on reasonably often while driving (it should only come on when you are stopped for several seconds first) it may have a small leak.

It usually only does it when i first start the car. sometimes when there are a lot of people in the car it happens more often. Is it something that i need to worry about repairing or does everyone's aurora do it? You are talking about the little black cylinder on the right rear of the right exhaust?

Definitely the leveling pump. More people in the car will cause the rear suspension to drop and the ELC will raise it up. I believe that black cylinder is the EVAP canister, the ELC is located just in front of where the rear links connect.

So you are talking about an 01' right? i think that the noise i hear s from a pump virbration. i am going to try to dampen the virbration by putting some foam around it. If i don't need to fix it then i won't. I am looking for an 03' white with pearl right now. I need one with under 30,000 miles though.

Definitely the load levelling pump for the rear shocks. Don't sweat it.

I hear the same noise in my 2001. It's loud with the engine off & the key in the run position, but very muted with the engine idling.

I didn't know about the load leveling. DO YOU HAVE TO DEACTIVATE ANYTHING BEFORE PUTTING IT ON A CAR LIFT? I have heard of some bad stuff going down when people don't turn off their air suspension on an explorer for example and the system keeps pumping and pumping till it explodes.

DO YOU HAVE TO DEACTIVATE ANYTHING BEFORE PUTTING IT ON A CAR LIFT? That is a FORD problem. - GM uses a more service friendly system.

First exploding Pintos, then exploding Crown Vics, now exploding Explorers.
