It seems like the crank sensors only fail on 2001's. Or at least that's all I seem to read. I thought I read some bulletin a while back about there being a bad supply of them or something, something that indicated later cars shouldn't have them fail.
So if you had them replaced on your 2nd gen 4.0 (by you or a previous owner), let us know what year it is, and if they were done more than once.

Bad crankshaft sensors seem to be a problem on the 2001 4.0, as I remarked in reply #3 in this thread.

I'm assuming that they replace both sensors when one or both fail. As my car had this service twice, separated by about 12K miles, it could have gone either way, once for one sensor and once for the other. However, I am going with my assumption and selected "2001 4.0 more than once."

My dad's were recently replaced. I'm pretty sure the service history when he bought it showed they'd been done, but I'll find out for sure.
I suspect they generally replace them in pairs?

I suspect they generally replace them in pairs? I guess so. Knowing these parts as I do, I think that if one has failed, the other one will soon.

That's exactly what the dealer told us. They replace both at the same time because the "good" on is likely to fail sooner or later and it's not much more expensive.

Is there anyway of knowing if they have been replaced already or not? What indicates a need to replaces these sensors?

The symptoms are pretty much described in Marc's post about his car doing it. The car will stall often, idle oddly, and almost stall out everytime you perform a cold start-up.

Mine had the PCM re-programmed once and then finally had the sensors replaced before I bought it. Runs like a top now.

Can anyone tell me what is the easiest way to get to the crank sensors? I can see them after removing the front plastic cover, but don't really know how to get to them. I could probably unhook the connector, but I don't think I could get a wrench in their to get the bolts out. Suggestions???

I have another 2 years on my warranty from the dealer. They refuse to replace the crankshaft sensors becasue the cars is not throwing codes. It dies only at stoplights at idle. Any ideas.

If it's a GM dealer, give'em hell!!! They would definitely know about the problem. Fight them on it, don't take no for an answer.
Good luck.

"I'm not suggesting this, but," unplug the sensor just long enough to set the code, then plug it back in and head on off to the dealer.. You'll have the code set that you need to get it replaced then.

Nice suggestion I "might" do that.

Shouldn't we be more upset about the whole crank sensor phenomenon in general. It seems like a lot of people have the same problem and GM did not make a recall or even a notice in general. Maybe I am just venting my frustration but I think that we should organize and revolt.
