Hey everyone,
Can anyone tell me where the crank sensors are located on a 2001 4.0? I've had a problem with the car stalling, but starts right back up. I read a thread that this is what is probably causing the car to die. I ordered the parts from GM Parts Direct, but not sure where I need to start. If anybody can let me know which shields need to be removed from underneath the car before I start, that would be great! Your help would be very appreciated.
Thanks!

Bad crank sensors will cause poor idling and a stall while going down the road (mine did it around 35mph). And yes, it will start up right away. I would approach it the way you are. Second guess would be fuel pump but that is much less likely.

Thanks very much! I really appreciate your help on this. I'll give it a try and see if I can get them changed out.
Thanks again.

Thanks for the picture of the location of the crankshaft position sensors. I just changed mine and everything went OK. My local GM dealer said that they are behind the accessories pulley on the end of the crankshaft. Boy was he wrong. They wanted three hours labor to install them. A GM mechanic with a hoist and all kinds of tools should be able to do it in about an hour. It took me three but I took the front passenger wheel off, took the accessory belt off, and the inside of the wheel well off. After I found out where they were It took only about and hour and a half to do the job. Thanks again for the information.

BKSSS, what kind of symptoms were you having. Since you replaced them, has the problem gone away?

The problem that I was having occurred as a misfire or stumble when driving down the highway at a constant speed. It would occur at no particular time. It would occur on a daily basis and then no problems for several days. It began to occur more often just before I replaced them. Got kind of worried that I may end up stranded out on a cold barren Canadian winter road so I replaced them. Have had no stumble for over a week since replacing them. Could be my imagination but the car seems to rev out a bit better when doing a high speed pass on the highway. Kim

I had a local GM dealer scan my car and they said that my crankshaft position sensors needed replacement. The only time I had a misfire was at highway speeds. There would be a slight jerk and then everything was normal. My car idled OK. I do not know what to advise about your problem. I spent about 40 dollars getting it scanned as I did not want to spend 170 bucks on two sensors and then find out that it was not a crank sensor problem. I am not well experienced in the Aurora mechanical department. Other list members have much more knowledge about this than I do. It was well worth it to install them myself. When dealers around here install items they charge an excessive amount of time and their shop rates are up there. Installation costs would have been close to 200 bucks for a job that took me part of an afternoon. Kim

So you got codes for this. No codes, no check engine light for me. I can live with this if it gets no worse. Is yours an early build or later. Mine was put in service in August of 2000.

I did not get a "check engine light" untill the jerking became much more common. I drove it for about a year (15,000 miles) before the check engine light came on. If my memory servs me correctly, I think there was some discussion about this some time ago. Some individuals felt that a total engine failure was not likely, don't quote me on that cuz I could be wrong. My wife has the car today, I will check the build date tonight. Kim

Can anyone tell me the process for changing the crank sensors I have new ones ordered and it looks like you have to remove the oil filter and filter bracket.
