When I started my 2001 yesterday, it took a lot of extra cranking. When it finally started, it idled very poorly, and then would stall. The check engine light was on while idling poorly. I called Olds roadside assistance. They said that they'd have a tow truck at my place within 1 hour, and they meant it. The truck was there in 45 minutes. I had the car towed to a Cadillac dealer. To make a long story short, the crankshaft sensors were bad. New crankshaft sensors = end of problem.

Glad to hear it was a quick fix. How many miles on your car, Marc?

Wow, Marc... you drive so few miles, did the dealership explain how those sensors went bad?

Right now, I've got just under 8800 miles on my 2001. I'm not surprised about the crankshaft sensors going out at relatively little mileage. I had read on this and other boards that they are a common cause of trouble in all engine speed ranges. The dealer didn't offer any reason why they failed.

You're kidding me! 88 hundred! You're almost thru the break-in period. I was able to get a service history of car. The crank sensor was replaced at 24K and again at 36Kmiles. There is only one sensor right? Or are there two? I hope they don't just replace them with the same poor quality part so that I can expect it to fail soon.

I think there was a problem with them initially. I don't believe the newer ones fail. There are two, though. I was thinking of starting a thread on this as I was curious.

Wacko....I'm not kidding. That's all it has right now. At this point in my life, I'm not doing much driving. There are 2 crankshaft sensors in the 2001 4.0....see this thread for info from the shop manual about them.

The whole thing added up to $445.91, as follows:
sensor, p/n 12575481................................68.88 sensor, p/n 12575482................................66.57 labor @ 92 per hour..................................276.00 NYS sales tax..............................................34.46
total..........................................................445.91
Besides replacing the sensors, there's also some recalibration of them after installation, according to the shop manual, so that added to the cost.
