Brand new to this board as of today. I own 2 Aurora's, a 2001 and a 1997. The 2001 was my first (not the V-8), it is blue, tan interior, even with the 3.5, a very potent car. I then purchased a 1997, black with tan interior, autobahn, with 74000 miles, with chrome rims and every option except Bose system. I have only had it since Sept 28th, and the only things done so far were throttle body and fuel injector cleaning, Hunter road force balance, switched it to Mobil 1, K & N filter, and put on a set of Flowmaster Series 40 mufflers with stainless steel tips. Gave the 2001 to my wife (she loves it!). The only thing left to fix (for now) is the groan in the steering. Absolutley love this car, and my neighbors think I'm strange for washing it so much, but yet they all really like it too.

Welcome. Lemme guess, that groan in the steering, happens at low speeds when turning right? Right? In fact thats the power steering hoses vibrating. No mechanical issues with that really but it can be a nuissance. The hose actually was designed at a certain length where it vibrates under its own resonance frequency (fluke engineering problem), if I recall correctly, the hoses get replaced with a universal power steering hose and the problem goes away. I believe all Classics (or early to mid classics) have this problem.

Welcome auroralover. Good name for a twofor owner. Let's see here, quote: "and the only things done so far were throttle body and fuel injector cleaning, Hunter road force balance, switched it to Mobil 1, K & N filter, and put on a set of Flowmaster Series 40 mufflers with stainless steel tips." That's more than about half of our little comunity have done, including yours truly, so you're in excellent standing already. Good to have you aboard!

Thanks guys, So the steering groan is not a mechanical issue? I thought it would be. Do you know how much the fix is for this?

Well, you may have a mechanical issue, I was hoping you'd confirm my diagnosis from a previous post above...but you may have another issue at hand, I cant say for sure. But if your steering problems sound like what I was describing then is a power steering quirk, not a serious mechanical problem.
You should get it in and looked at if you wish.

Jim, yes it is the low speed groaning on right turns, just thought it might be serious; apparently not. That's good news, don't want to spend extra money aound holidays if I don't have to. By the way, I just replaced the FPR on Wednesday; hope nobody ever pays to have this done, it's such an easy job, especially if I can do it.

Sorry it took so long to see/read this thread.
The groan in the 2nd generation steering is a lubrication issue believe it or not. It is not rack or steering pump related. I have had my '01 done three times (I think). It is also common on Chevy and GMC trucks only GM did an update to these models to cure it. Since there seems to be relatively few Auroras on the road, GM apparently feels they don't need a permanent fix for us.
Bring it to the dealer and have them lube the steering column for you. When I get home tonite, I can post the part # for the lube in case you want to do it yourself. If anyone has a shop manual I would absolutely love to get a copy of this procedure so I can do my own.

Thanks for the reply Rocket;love your final 500, it is too cool! How many of us have the distinction of owning 2 Aurora's? How much is the ISS lube, as I'm not sure I could do it myself?

More than happy to help!
The part # is 26098237 and is referred to as the Intermediate Steering Shaft Lubricant. I can't tell you how much it costs because my service was always under warranty. I have the factory 5yr/60k miles on the '01. I believe it is in a needle and doesn't work like a conventional zerk fitting. I tried to figure out how it gets done but couldn't. Even at a dealer, the cost can't be very high. Be sure to do it before it gets too cold out. You won't believe how good it is when you get it back. . .

Welcome aboard Auroralover, Just to let you know, I'm putting together a Custom Indiglo Gauges pre-order for the Classic Aurora. You can find more detailed information at the website below. www.speedhut.com/15orders_el_detail.asp?auto_number=75&bhcp=1No one else in the web or internet has them available, so we in the pre-order would be the very first people to own a set of these gauges. Thanks, Javi.
