you start on a project only to find out that you need a slightly smaller tool in order to finish the job. Today, I decided to tackle the job of cleaning my mutifunction swith so I could do away with the dreaded flashing of the lights we all have heard about. Well I disconnected the battery, removed half the dash (or what seemed like it), unplugged the air bag and then tried to take apart the steering wheel column cover. Thats where I got suck. The nutdriver I have is a shade to big to fit in one of the holes. So insted of breaking the whole thing, I elected to put it back together so that I can go get the right tool and try it again next time that I am off. Oh well, maybe I'll have to resort to disconnecting the battery everytime I leave the car for more than an hour. Hope everyone has had fun reading my little "woe is me story." Have a great day all!

What is this "dreaded flashing of the lights" thing? Never heard of it.

In the 1st gen there is a relay that is known by many to go bad when you least expect it. One day you will walk outside and your car will be batting her eyelashes at you. The lights, all of a sudden, turn on and off at random. It wreaks havoc on the battery, sometimes even killing it in the process. If you sit inside your car you hear a clicking sound. It really gets annoying after awhile. Anyway, the clicking sound is actually a relay of the multifunction switch. The problem seems to be that it comes "lubed" with to much grease from the factory and over time (I'm guessing here) that grease liquifies to the point where it makes contact with other electrical circuts and closes the circut causing the "dreaded flashing of the light" disease.
If you have not had this happen to you, then consider yourself lucky.
I will (try and remember to) take pictures and document the process when I go back in.

Ah yes, the dreaded flashing of the lights. I too had this problem. I shall take a photo of my ingenius fix! Stay tuned kiddies!

If you sit inside your car you hear a clicking sound. It really gets annoying after awhile. Are you serious, thats what that noise is that sounds like the blinkers are on? i'll have to pay attention to the progress cause i agree that it is very annoying.

omegiac you're all confused, you're at work. Those lights are suppose to flash. (Sorry, I couldn't resist) Anyway, thanks erw, so far I've been lucky with this one (knocking on wood) but I'm sure to get the desease soon now that its been mentioned. Everytime I read about some malady my car hears it and thinks she needs to have it too. Oh yes, these cars are females! Anything else you love so much and causes you so much trouble? I rest my case.

Thanks 4liter. I actually already have the repair printed out. The only thing that stopped me was the fact that the torx head screwdriver that I had was a smidgeon to big. I'll get to it when I have my next day off. Thanks again
