Well, that's pretty much what I was getting at. Wet sanding isn't a very subtle way to attack defects. What happens for people who bring their cars in for regular detailing? What about people who have had their paint wetsanded in the past but weren't aware of it or didn't inform you? Have you had any instances of sanding through the clear, or people who've reported clearcoat failure after you've detailed their car this way?

A paint thickness gauge can help, though you can only guess at the original film thickness. And the paint will vary a fair bit as you move the gauge around to different spots. It's hard to take a before/after on the same exact spot since any sort of marking of the spot will be removed by sanding or buffing.
