I had actually done this installation of a Garmin Street Pilot III in my 2001 4.0 last year. I always wanted navigation, but I didn't want to get the nav radio because it has no provision for cassettes. So I got a Garmin SP III, and mounted on the right side of the console. The first picture shows it turned toward the driver's seat. It's showing a portion of Bergen Co., New Jersey (more about that at the bottom of the post). The second picture shows it turned parallel to the console and covered with a cover I made. I would have loved to have had this item a long time ago when I was driving around in Bergen Co, NJ. (My girlfiend of the time lived there). Where ever we went, we'd always get lost. _________________ GM!!! BRING BACK OLDS!!!

Don't you think all that stuff attached to the console interrupts the ambience of the interior? Although that GPS mount is pretty neat, did you consider painting it to match the vinyl?

Well if your going to use somthing for navagation, you might as well get a computer for the car utilizing a touch screen {the computer is in the trunk and the screen can be 8 inches} You can add GPS to it , or you can watch a dvd or burn a cd rom or track your car from the inernet if it ever gets stolen using the on board GPS or what ever you would do with a computer either do it right or dont do it at all , iknow ive installed few already , on one car an impala 2004 , i put the sreen in the dash with a little customizing NP or like this fellow use a arm , but a swing away so as not to take from the ambiance of the car

One more question...did you hook up an external antenna, or is the stock one good enough to read right thru the windows?

Omegaic....The stock antenna that is sticking up on the right side of the SP III works very nicely. (It folds down when not in use). The only time that an external antenna would be necessary is if the unit were installed in a location where the stock antenna did not have a clear view of the sky through the windows. In the location that I have it, the stock antenna sees the sky through the windshield. _________________ GM!!! BRING BACK OLDS!!!

I think it looks pretty cool with a nice installion like that. Yeah, you could go whole hog like zipzag notes, but that's a lot of cutting of the dash, replacing the stereo, etc. Marc, I believe you can get, or it comes with, a flexable mounting stalk the bends down when not in use, does yours? The Garmin is a very nice unit, I have owned several.
I have extensive experience with GPS from my boating hobby. Lost on the way to the mini mart? Try 10 miles offshore in a heavy fog with only a dangerous, narrow inlet to safety (Barnegat for those who know). Ok, so I followed another crusier thru the inlet, the GPS got me close enough to do that.
I never ask for directions. Men have a larger brain mass in the hippocampus region than women have, and this has been linked to sense of direction. I will however look at a map, thats what charts are for. The Garmin is a fancy map, so within the rules of manhood.

Thats a map you know. ;D

Letitroll98....The SP III doesn't come with a flex mount. I did get one separately that was intended for a cell phone mount, but after doing a mock up with the flex stalk, I decided to make my own rigid mount. ________________ GM!!! BRING BACK OLDS!!!

Does it count if you call a friend and ask them to look up directions on mapquest? Thats a map you know. ;D No erw38, this is a clear violation of the rules manhood. Had you looked on the mapquest site before leaving, used a bluetooth to get on the site from your cell phone, or consulted a printout created from Mapquest, you would have been within the classification 804 subsection d, paragraph 14 of the official codebook of manhood. What? You don't have a copy? It was probably taken from you at some place you stopped and asked for directions. Calling and asking for directions is even more wimpy than stopping at a gas station and (cough, cough) asking for directions. Vis a vis at least the gas station is anonomous, calling your friends and everyone knows. Com'on man, buck up! ;D

As I can't afford the Garmin Street Pilot Installation. I purchased a map of all gas station locations in the country. As per 'manly poor folk' rule number 2009 I can ask once per trip but I must avert my eyes from any cute looking ladies while doing so.

He he, good one Isnibs. I don't know where this "not asking for directions" comes from, but it is truly pervasive. Just witness the proliferation of nav devices in car, as per our friend Marc's example.
Personally, I have a very good sense of direction and am almost never lost. Even when I don't know what road I'm on or where it goes, I can almost always find my destination by going "that way". In fact I very much enjoy navigating by dead reckoning, finding new routes to work or the mall, or that out of the way spot someone mentioned on vacation, etc. So I have to admit to perpetuating the stereotype. What about you guys, do you wander about, always have a set route, or (cough cough) ask for directions?

I never ask for directions, I know the rules. Fortunately whenever I get lost the missus is with me, it's OK for her to ask for directions, and then I can say, "See, I knew that all along" and off we go. ;D

i like it , but i would have taken time and found some where else, maybe where the cigarette lighter is, with the door you could have shut over it. maybe swing out from inside the arm rest.
i used to have a mini truck though and have quite a bit of customizing talent. overall a pretty nice job, may get one of those next, how much are they?

Obscenities....I paid about $750 for the Street Pilot III. Garmin has since brought out newer & more expensive nav units. You can see them at the site noted below. www.garmin.com/mobile/products.html#automotive__________________ GM!!! BRING BACK OLDS!!!
