Any ideas what would cause an Aurora not to shift from park? Would this be a transmission solenoid problem?

When you put foot on brake to shift, isn't there an electric solenoid switch that releases the gear shift? That could be on fritz or stuck? That's my guess...

Your BTSI solenoid is bad. It is located inside the center console and requires removal of the shift console trim plate. Don't know the GM number, but it is common to many GM cars. It is a safety feature that prevents the trans from shifting out of park until the brake pedal is depressed, which de-energizes it. The BTSI can only lock the shifter in the "park" position.
It's a black solenoid that attaches on one end at the shifter and the other at the shift base plate. Has a small 2-wire connector that plugs into it. This device mechanically attaches on either end like the piston assists on your hood/trunk.
The service manual only briefly references it in a diagram and doesn't give instructions for failure analysis nor remove-replace.
To access: remove console trim plate. To verify failure: unplug the connector at the device, turn key to ON and shift from park. Being a safety feature, I replaced mine but it can be left unplugged to defeat it.
Looking back, perhaps I should have removed the sifter from the vehicle floor for easier access to R&R this part. There ain't much room in the shifter mechanism for big hands.

The guy says its stuck in park, not meaning the gear selector that works fine. He says it just won't move when you select a gear

The condition "inability to shift from park", is the BTSI (brake-transmission-shift-interlock) solenoid. I had the same problem. It rarely fails and the shift problem described was my symptom. Simple to diagnose before looking at the trans itself as the cause.
Can the shift button be pushed into the shift handle, with car on and brake pedal depressed? That was my condition. The button was stuck and would not allow the shifter to release from park.

I had the exact same issue with my Intrigue. Unable to depress the button to move the shift lever out of the "Park" position. I just removed the solenoid. Popped it off with a screwdriver. The key interlock still works, just not the brake interlock.

The guy says its stuck in park, not meaning the gear selector that works fine. He says it just won't move when you select a gear In that case either the shifter cable is broken or it came loose at one end.

Hey guys,
I just got a similar issue here. The button pushes in no problem, I'm on the break, but it won't shift out of park. The engine starts no problem. Right before this happened there was a bit of smoke coming out of the engine and it smelled like el. wire burning. Also, the A/C stopped working. I have no idea if any of these are in any way related, but that was the sequence of events. I don't care about the A/C, I just need it to shift into gear so I wonder if this sounds like the same issue here. Thanks!

Ok, I was able to fix this. It was just the gear shifter. After I took it off I was able to put it in gear by pushing the white release button manually. When I put the shifter back on it worked like a charm. Strange, but I'm glad it works.

So my wife's car is doing this with regularity this time of year. Very annoying as she works nights and just missed another meeting after letting the car warm up for 10 minutes. I went out a minute ago and it shifted fine. But the other day when it was 31 degrees, it was locked up. So does anyone have the links for replacing the interlock solenoid? I need to fix this ASAP before my wife goes to work tonight.

Once you get under the console/shifter area you can't miss the solenoid. I think someone said you can disconnect it and the car knows no difference. I never looked at a diagram or anything.

Can I use a jumper cable to power up the system at the battery terminals since the battery is dead?
