Joe, $25 of $100 is 25%. Still a bit pricey but I suppose it is due to the shape of the item and its packaging???

I just installed the strut tower brace, from Gm parts direct, on my 2001 Aurora. it took about ten minutes to install and there was a noticable difference in handling. The car was very flat in the twisties. It also seemed to help smpooth out the ride. It makes a big difference in the dips and swallows the car just does not drop it hold very flat. 2001 aurora with 88,000 miles. 100 total with shipping and handling of $25 33 % of product cost for shipping and handling was stiff but this is an easy and effective upgrade. JOe Dang... I really don't want to spend $100 on the Aurora, but this is sounding more and more appealing...

It's just so worth it on either car. Especially since RSM offers theirs at $340. I'd like to find a rear strut brace as well. RSM has one for "only" $200, anybody have a GMPartsDirect P/N for the rear brace?

Buccaneers fan you are correct
75 for product 25 for shipping total of 100
25/75 = 33%
othewhise, the brace appears to really flatten out the ride. not only on the back roads but also on the highway the car feels much more responsive to steering wheel movements. I reccommended the brace to a friend with a 2000 Bonniville. This is quite a heavy duty peice.
and I too started thinking about the rear brace.
let me know if you find a number .

I don't think GM made a car will a rear strut bar. The RSM bar is actually a good deal if you consider they have to have them custom made just for the very few Aurora owners who have ordered one. I'd love to get one, but check my sig for an obstacle in the way.

Er, just for clarification. I have a '97 Aurora. Do both Serville and Bonneville tower bars work ok with this model year? Can the Bonneville version work without modification? Or should I just get the Serville version and use washers (what size washers and how many per side are required)?
Thanks,
Colin

Reread the thread and you'll see the mods needed to make the one I got from GMParts work. Bending the mounting tabs is more important than washers. I used one 'extra' only as a final tuning. This part is not meant for Auroras, but you can make it work.

Okay guys, I just got my bar from GMPartsdirect. I noticed the mounting holes don't match with the studs on the strut towers. Is this what you needed to bend the ends for? I'm a little disapointed but I hope I can still make it work. I was also thinking of painting it red along with the engine cover. On a black car, popping the hood to see that red would look pretty cool!
Any more help on modifying the bar would be greatly appreciated!

which bar did you buy? You didn't buy the bar that I posted the part numbers for did you? (that bar is for the 2nd gen only.) The bar you need for a classic is less money than the 2nd gen's. The 2nd gen bar is nearly 100, I think the classic bar is less than $50.

No, I bought the first part number supplied. It was $18 plus the shipping, around $30 total. Part number 25653157. I'm pretty sure it will work. It's really close, I just have to manipulate it a bit. I can't wait to have better handling tho, especially after being used to driving a Camaro and Vette.

Yea, if you noticed back, I painted mine silver to match the rest of the engine bay. Looks quite good IMO. Though I used spray-can metillac silver and it started to bubble up. I'm having my brother repaint it as he got a spray gun.

yeah, it was me that installed it. Bar 25768516 Bracket left 10360987 bracket right 10360988 Total cost was right near $100 for the GXP bar. So this is the Bonne GXP strut bar on a Aurora 2001+? Looks nice.... Is it stiff?

Oh yeah it's stiff! The car has little to no flex in corners now. It's one of the best handling FWD full size cars I have ever driven. this includes Grand Prixs as well! I have almost no lean/flex in corners.. just what I wanted! It also adds a more solid feel in the front end over bumps. I totally recommend it. I don't know what the clearance will look like on the V8 engine though.

This is one modification that would be really beneficial to anyone. There is a brace that fits the Classic too?

Dan, 1: How is this working for you after all of these months? 2. Did installing the brace affect your alignment? 3. What in the world is the square black patch for on our firewalls? (Located in the bottom picture between the strut tower and the brake unit.)

Dan, 1: How is this working for you after all of these months? 2. Did installing the brace affect your alignment? 3. What in the world is the square black patch for on our firewalls? (Located in the bottom picture between the strut tower and the brake unit.) 1. It works great, just as Custom explains in his 2nd Gen thread. 2. Not a bit, and it really shouldn't. The only effect on it would be to keep it more in alignment during hard cornering. The McPherson strut design is not at all ideal for maintaining proper caster and camber angles during cornering and is at best a poor compromise in order to fit FWD applications within reasonable space limitations. The only effective solution is to make the points on the body/frame that the suspension mounts to as rigid as possible. Thus the positive effect of the brace between the strut towers. 3. Do you mean the ELC, the aluminum box on the tower? Or that mounting point covering on the firewall?

[ Dan, there is a square patch on the firewall in this picture, right where the firewall dips in toward the driver. There is a hole there that is covered. Nothing seems to be used by it, any idea what it is for?

Funny that this topic is revived... that was my idea too. My strut tower brace just arrived via DHL this morning from Flow Chevrolet (i.e. GMPartsDirect) and I plan on installing it as soon as I have a chance!

\ What did you do to the ends of the bar to get the holes to line up? I was thinking of widening the holes with a drill, opening them up enough to allow the bolts to line up. Any other ideas?

What did you do to the ends of the bar to get the holes to line up? I was thinking of widening the holes with a drill, opening them up enough to allow the bolts to line up. Any other ideas? I didn't drill a thing, the bolts lined up perfectly. The problem was that the cross bar would have pushed down on the brake reservoir enough to easily break it (never a good thing) without modification of some sort. I carefully bent the ends of the mounting bracket (where the holes are) downward to raise the height of the bar enough to clear the brake reservoir. Put the bracket in a vice and bend the upper part down, then bend the area closer to the holes back to perpendicular so the bolts will seat properly. But if you raise the bar too much, it bangs against the hood, so you have to get it just right, about 1/16" to 1/8" above the reservoir. If you don't have mechanical common sense best leave it alone and have someone help you. Alternative fixes would be to buy longer bolts and put some type of spacer under the bar, or remount the brake assembly lower on the firewall.
