There's SOMETHING EXTRA about owning an Olds!

Ok, so I haven't posted here much in quite awhile but still loving my Auroras. Anyway, I thought I would share the details of an eventful year for the Auroras (and it's not even over).
We have two black '99 Auroras. The one with the tan interior we call the "A" Rora because it's the nicer of the two. The one with the black interior we call the "B" Rora.
New Year's Eve, or more appropriately, early New Year's morning, I was awakened by a call from my oldest son. Driving back from his girlfriend's house in Jackson in the "A" Rora, he fell asleep on the freeway while driving 75 mph. The car went off the road, flew through a ditch and ended up parked on an embankment facing the road. Fortunately he was fine, and there was minor damage to the car. No BAC and a very humble attitude equaled no ticket for Numba One Son. Could have been much worse.
The next day he was driving the "B" Rora home when a friend of his who was following him back rear ended the car in his '88 MR2. The damage to the MR2 was considerable. A few of the scuffs on the "B" Rora's bumper cover did not buff out.
This were pretty quiet for awhile after that until late summer. My oldest daughter was driving the "A" Rora down our driveway when suddenly a tree jumped out in front of her. It's shocking how agile they are! The left fender was smashed, the control arm broke, the header panel was crunched....
$2,200 later the damage from the leaping tree and sleeping son was all fixed. Two weeks after that, eldest daughter was backing the "B" Rora out of the garage and she hooked a little too soon. Insto-Presto, another toasted left front fender.
So, I think the "B" Rora is heading for a date with the beautician as well.
Sigh.

Ouch.. I think at this point, I would get them a cheapo car ($500) and tell them to fix it themselves. I can understand that wrecks/accidents happen, but backing into a tree multiple times? THE SAME TREE? lol

The "A" Rora is better than it was when I got it, since I had the rear bumper cover resprayed to fix some luggage marks while it was in. I'm still on the fence on the "B" Rora. My son has been using it at college and he isn't as meticulous with cars as I am. If I spend the bucks to fix the fender, there are some other things the car needs and I'm probably in the $1,500 range. Still mulling over the cost/benefit analysis of that one. I did attend Homecoming this year. It's pretty hard to skip an Oldsmobile show about five miles from your house! However, I didn't have another driver, so I just took the 98. I took a lot of pictures that can be viewed here: www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.3679636062802.154055.1032037490&type=3Always a great show. The two big projects this year have been getting my '71 Sea Ray back in the water and running and starting a series of improvements on one of my '65 Corvairs.

Sounds like your kid experience is similar to mine. Son 1 clipped a bridge abutment to the tune of $7500 on the Aurora - damage similar to your tree incident. I bought him his own car to wreck and so far, only 1 tree has jumped into the back of the car (Intrigue 1). Son 2 got his own (Intrigue 2) to wreck before he could even try to wreck mine. Only one he's had so far is the garage post jumped into the side of the car....just a little scuff on both the car and the post.

I am simply amazed at how quickly garages and trees can move. Oddly, they also seem to know to attack younger drivers.

Good for you to be a safe driver. I'm thinking I will have the "B" Rora fixed and if I do, it'll be better than it was to begin with. So I guess every cloud has a silver lining! Now, if I could only get my wife to stop driving the Auroras through the car wash with the antenna up....

Wow, your children must really attract those trees. Living in Poland at first I wasn't sure if you're joking about the moving trees, because a friend of mine was actually attacked by one - it fell right in front of his hood while he was driving in a strong wind Well, I'm 21 myself and never caused any accident other than hitting a construction barrier when I was in a hurry driving a Tico at night in a rain (with steamed up windows all around) at around 20 km/h, because I failed to notice it It only caused a split on the turn signal though. The pictures from the show are great - thanks for sharing them

I'm glad y'all enjoyed the Homecoming pictures.
As far as kids and wrecks are concerned, I think about the old adage pilots use: a good landing is a landing any landing where you walk away. A great landing is one where you walk away AND the plane is reusable.
By that standard, these were GREAT accidents. The most important thing to me is that the kids are fine. Accidents happen and cars can be repaired or replaced. Harder to do that with kids.

This reminds me of when a gas pump "jumped" in front of my first Aurora and scuffed up my front bumper. I have never seen a gas station full of people move so quickly. Apparently it is highly frowned upon to run into a gas pump.

not reeeeeeeally, only takes about 9 months! I'm 26 and have never had an accident or claim of any kind in my life... until this summer when a 200+ lbs deer jumped into the side of my car, near the front driver's side. I now truly know just how strong and durable these beautiful beasts are. I like to think of myself as a very competent driver.. safe yes, but aggressive. I sometimes like to think my Aurora is a modified corvette zero 1 (like in Arnold's THE LAST STAND movie with over 1000hp) ;D *on another note, my 01 3.5L beat a Lexus ES or infiniti Q50.. maybe could have even been an Infiniti G35 off the block. SOrry, couldn't tell as i was ahead and couldn't see a model tag. guy pulled up beside me at the red lights after (with a hot chick in the passenger seat) and complemented my car. Deceivingly ballsy.

Same thing happend to me after I raced an older BMW, he did eventually sneak past me but at the red light he rolls down the window and says "man that thing is "fu$%in fast!" So that was kind of cool haha. I don't see these Auroras as being fast at all. Do they hold their own? Sure. I think its just that they are quicker than people expect.

Agreed. People probably see the OLDS symbol and a huge full size car and don't know that these cars have engines to match their girth.... I do wish I had a 4.0 though....
