Is it normal for my car to lose a quart of engine oil like every month or two? Idk if it burns it or leaks it.. Do any of your Auroras lose as much as mine? I check my oil like twice a week. I always buy a new quart like every 2 months or so. If I remember correctly its synthetic 10w 30? Im not sure maybe thats for my moms Suburban lol. Thanks

It just comes with owning the beast.

I burn absolutely no oil. Although leaks are a whole other story. I do actually believe using a high mileage oil has slowed mine though I'm down to a quart or less between oil changes and I usually only change the oil twice a year (synthetic)

Yeah that's why I said 90% of us lol. Since changing over to high mileage I'm losing about a quart between oil changes whickh is like every 4 months or so.

You need to give your car a couple of good 0-100 (0-160 for our Canadian friends) uphill acceleration runs if you are burning more than a quart every 2000 miles or so. Fun to do, and give great results in fuel economy and oil consumption....

Isn't it common for the 3.5 to burnoil?

I didn't know any of this?!?! And here I am thinking there's a problem as to why I have to add oil between changes!!! Sheeesh. So why does it burn thru oil.... I thought they weren't supposed to.

Bad rings... or valve guides and valve seals. My 03 4.0 would smoke blue on startup indicating bad valve seals/guides

Valvoline Maxlife made my Oil leak FAR MORE than normal oil for some reason. I use walmart 15W40 motor oil that helps with leaks.

When I first got my '97, it leaked a puddle overnight almost the diameter of a coffee can. After switching to Max-Life, it dried it up in short order and it barely drips now (50k miles later).
It also cured or greatly diminished some smokers I used to have (valve seals). I swear by the stuff.

i thought 5w30 was THE only option for our cars.... so other than 15w40 (diesel oil), what works well to stop this burning of oil (although i dont get ANY blue smoke from my exhaust). it must be getting burned/evap in the engine bay somewhere. I have a dark spot on the insulation under the hood on the driver's side closer to the windshield than front bumper.

My 2002 leaks oil bad enough after it warms up that the car blows smoke from under the hood. It started a couple of months ago, and I haven't really crawled underneath yet to look for where it is coming from. I'm pretty sure it is on the back of the motor above the transmission though, and I am NOT looking forward to what it will take to fix it. I can't afford it and don't have the tools to do it myself.

wow i never knew so many of us had this lol. well my exhaust doesnt shoot out visible smoke or anything like that. and that comment about racing the engine to 100 isnt that a bad thing to do? im gentle with my car i never take the rpm over 2 and a half.. is that good or bad? so what oil is the best for me? i have around 129,000 miles. and im pretty sure this isnt suppose to happen but when i changed the spark plugs about a month ago there was a little of oil on like 2 of the plugs. i dont really want to get into that though lol im just a college student

Well to make it stop eating oil u need to rebuild the engine but doesnt mean it will last long. That a common issue with Aluminum engine. My Friend 2006 BMW x5 was burning 2-4 qt in 2 weeks when the car had 90k they rebuild it under warranty and then at 140k same thing.

Actually red lining the tech in the 4.0 is the best way to clear carbon build up from within the engine. I'm not sure if uts the same case for the 3.5L. But I do know that northstar engines do not like to be babied, they are meant to be ran hard.

And I eventually plan on rebuilding my engine (only @ 189,000KMS right now, so not for another 50K-60K hopefully at least). how much are we looking at for an engine rebuild if we take it into the mechanic? is there a total strip down and rebuild HOW-TO for a 3.5L? I don't get blue smoke out anywhere, nor do I think i smell any of it burning.... but i'm adding anywhere between 1L-2L between 3.5K-4K oil changes.

Hey, I'm using a quart every 3500 - 4K also. But I only change when the computer tells me to, usually around 6K. My wife's 03 pontiac with 3.8 L does same, as does my 3.8 L Chrysler t&C. Some oil usage can be considered normal if there are no other problems. If that amount changed suddenly, I'd be alarmed, but bottom of car is dry. All looks good. No smoke that I have seen. My 01 turned 150K miles last week. I bought it T-giving 2012 with 124K on it. Still runs like a champ, although it isn't w/o some issues. But the oil isn't bothering me.
Good luck working it out. Randy

Could be bad valve cover gaskets. A little oil on spark plugs is normal.

hey guys it was getting worse so i took it to get checked by 2 places and they both said the same things. something about the front crank seal was gone.. So I got it fixed that same day and now (so far..) there isn't any oil loss! I'm just hoping it stays that way.

I have a 1995 Aurora 106k and had smoke coming through the hood, wound up that it wasn't oil but rather power steering fluid. Check your power steering level, if it's low add POWER STEERING FLUID ONLY, not automatic transmission. After that check at least once a week or add if the power steering gets noisy. It might be a pressure hose, in my case it was a pressure hose AND the rack and pinion gear box and computer sending unit for the Magna Steering. Had that replaced along with a wheel alignment at cost $1500.

Mine is just under 200k miles right now. Eats oil like crazy! I would say a quart to 500 miles. What is just amazing to me is the plugs never fowl or the thing never blows any blue smoke out the tail pipes. Also, no leaking from anywhere. I guess I am burning it, but not really sure what I should do except just keep driving it.

If it ever comes to rebuilding the engine I think I would just sell it.. I like the car but I dont think I would have that kind of money, I already spent so much. Since I bought the car Ive spent around 1300 in repairs.. I just want to keep it well maintained since they are rare. BTW ima try to update pic, I dont even have those rims on it any more.
