Bought "Dora" from gator, already had a 4.6 installed, non-Autobahn, would not run, I eventually found the front exhaust cam bolt was loose and sheared the cam pin off. I worked on it a bit and pulled the head, could not see any damage, but I decided to keep the engine, since is studded, and go over it again sometime, it's going in storage. I will be installing another 4.6 from the salvage yard. I got one yesterday from a wrecked '96 Seville SLS vin "Y". The Cadillac even had a new GM trans in it, looked brand new, brand new fluid, and had a sticker from GM parts, that's a $2200 part. It was tough leaving that behind, but I already have 2 good trannys in storage. I pulled the drive train out here on my carport and I have the donor engine on the stand, I am going to seal the bottom end this time so I don't regret that later. I didn't really want to put the engine on my trunk like that, but you gotta do what you gotta do sometimes, it rode solid 35 miles like that. That's where I am at this point. Storage has been a mess since I scrapped #13, hood and a trunk hanging up, 2 Aurora engines, 2 Aurora trannys, and in the back is a 10x10 pile of parts that was inside the parts car.

Haha, never would have thought I'd see a 4.6 in the BACK of an Aurora. Looking forward to the installation.

How about some more junk in the trunk?! I am messing up my Aurora a little bit, but I already needed a new rear bumper. I have hauled many engines and transmissions back there. I had to go back and get this trans that was from the Cadillac I pulled the engine from, luckily it was still setting where I left it. $2500 or more part I picked up for $90. About to separate. Oil leaks on the replacement 4.6.

Flushed heater core and radiator, lot's of gunk, makes me wonder about the original engine. I have read some bad casting on certain engines will cause stud or insert failure. Removed engine from transmission yesterday after work.

According to Carroll Custom Cadillac every year N* had issues with castings. Hit or miss I suppose.

Way past budget on this thing and I keep finding more things wrong. It needs a flex plate, cv axle, and maybe a steering rack. I think I may have everything but the rack, because I just had to put one in my car. Sub frame was bent, but I was able to hammer it out, tapped the coolant crossover bolt holes and removed the oil pan. Could not get harmonic balancer off with my puller, will borrow one for tonight. Another cracked flexplate! This is the reason this Aurora got a 4.6 in the first place, the original 4.0 and trans had a knock, gator planned the swap, ended up finding a broken flexplate was causing the noise. This bracket makes me think there might be something wrong with the rack.

Damn. I'd say that would cause some noise. Was that the only thing wrong the previous engine you think then?
Also, is that a thread chaser or a tap?

darn. I'd say that would cause some noise. Was that the only thing wrong the previous engine you think then? Also, is that a thread chaser or a tap? It's a tap. Gators original 4.0 had a knock, that's why he built the 4.6 to swap, that original knock in the 4.0 ended up being a broken flex plate, and this 4.6 he swapped in happened to have a broken flex plate, too. This current 4.6 would not even barely run when I got it, which I eventually discovered it had the loose cam bolt that sheared the cam sprocket pin and allowed the exhaust cam to randomly flop. It did start a few times and it sounded horrible. Then there is that one time I forgot the fuel return hose was off and it started and then backfired and caused quite a big fire, that is why I am replacing the engine harness. Lol. I could be wrong, but gator brought it to a meet, after the 4.6 swap, and I think it may have had a noise at that time. Does anyone else remember? I think I could get you a 4.6 for $300 labor. That does not include shipping and packaging. It does include me finding a wrecked Cadillac that appears in good condition, sending pictures for approval, and pulling the long block and preparing it for shipping. I would not be responsible for any warranty or problems with the engine, but I would try to find the best option, and chance of a good engine, like I would my own. I have access to 2 salvage yards. Pick n pull and Buddys U Pull a Part, use zip code 65803 or Springfield Missouri for location. They have lots of Cadillacs, most not wrecked, most probably with bad engines. Buddys has lots of marked repos, but that's a gamble in the dark.

Here are some pictures of my rebuild done a few years back with cast inserts. Working flawlessly. A link to the rebuild thread can be found here.

Project update. Dead.
Installed engine in car, never hooked it up. If the engine still turns over, it's going in my car, this 97 will now be a parts car.
