BOOK MARKED!!! Mine is doing the same thing and i need to replace it as well. just have to wait till it gets warm out because Chicago weather is crazy one day its 30 the next 60 degrees! I want to try the techron plus but mine has been doing it since i got the car last Aug. So i figure that i might as well learn more about my car and get my hands a little dirty!!! but wont it be better to do it when the gas is almost on E???

but wont it be better to do it when the gas is almost on E??? The fumes are what ignite, not the gasoline. So, IMO, the more gas you have in the tank the better. It's still going to make a big mess either way, when you remove the pump assembly it is full of gas and hard to dump it before it's out. I figured out today you can remove the sensor and bend the fingers back if most of them are still there. It works fine now. Mine wasn't bad, but I was seeing if I could fix an extra one I had.

According to the print out on my service record, the '02 that I just picked up had its fuel tank sensor replaced in 2005. Does this mean the new sensor has the upgraded contact fingers in it or will I need to worry about the fix later on down the road? well lookie here! deja vu. my sending unit on my '02 stopped working recently and I just fixed it this weekend. so now i have fixed both my '99 and my '02 using this method!

Gauge in the '01 has been stuck on "F" forever so I tackled this today. Maybe took an hour including hammering the lock ring and prep/clean up. thank you aurorabrain!

FWIW I was surfing for some other products and found a Dorman 911-022 Fuel sender unit designed specifically for this. It looks to be complete from flow to wiring harness and amazon has it for $35. Just FYI....

Just FYI.... Awesome update to an old but useful thread. My 2nd Aurora is now doing this so I came back to find the part number. I think I'll order the Dorman exact part rather than the kit I used the last time.

Got the job done this weekend. The Doorman repair kit is great--no need to re-use old parts on a new sender.
Like everyone else I struggled with the retaining ring. It wasn't in bad shape but I bet even on a new car they suck to remove. I was getting nowhere with a hammer & big screwdriver in that tight space--but then I found a tool perfect for the job. Use an air chisel with a notched chisel attached. Place the notch on one of the shoulders on the ring (not on the fingers) and let the chisel back it off. My ring stopped moving after making some progress so then I jabbed a pointed tool in the slot that had opened up and used the chisel to impact the pointed tool to pull the ring back off the tabs.
20 minutes with hammer & screwdriver = 0 progress. 1 minute with air chisel = done.

2002 aurora gas gauge jumps. I read read the posts about replacing the fuel level sensor. Will the erratic level trigger a code 446? Thanks for any help!

Will the erratic level trigger a code 446? Thanks for any help! P0446? I don't see how it would. That code indicates an electrical issue with the vent valve solenoid. Check the harness and connector first. IIRC, it's back by the tank...

Thanks rigger! I ordered the harness kit. I'll get the vent solenoid from rockauto. Hopefully can get it all done at one time. I'll let you know the outcome. This car seems to have sensor issues, crank and oil pressure have already been replaced. I think they were affected by oil in the connection. Sealed the connections with silicone and replaced valve cover gaskets. Next issue to address is code 1811? Long shifts Again thanks for the help!

My gas gauge jumps from 3/4 to a full tank and mostly always shows full. Would this help the issue on the 1999 model? Yes replacing the sending unit would more than likely solve the problem.
