I bought the Meguiars Smooth Surface Clay Kit a couple days ago and just used it tonight. It was my first time claying so I can't say how it relates to other kits, but it's amazing! I couldn't be happier with the finish. My car has never been clayed before so the difference was VERY noticable. It took four hours altogether for my friend Rami and I to get it done. Here's what we did: - Washed with Meguiar's Gold Class Car Wash - Dried with Chamois - Clayed using the Meguiars Kit (Quick Detialer spray used as lubricant for claybar. Wiped off with microfiber towel.) - Washed (again) with Meguiar's Gold Class Car Wash - Dried (again) with Chamois - Waxed with Meguiar's NXT Generation Tech Wax The finish is unbelievable, I didn't know that my car could look this good. I haven't seen her in the sun yet, I'll post some pics before long. The kit itself comes with: - 16oz spray bottle of Mist & Wipe Quick Detailer (used as lubricant) - 2 Claybars in a plastic case - 4oz (sample size) bottle of Cleaner Wax - Microfiber Towel I used the techwax that my friend had b/c he said it was a better product and it sure seems to have done a good job. I'm going to do my mom's Lexus next week and use the Meguiars wax, I'll post how it does. All in all it was a good purchase, only $18 at Target. I would definitely recommend it. Zach used the same product in this How-to-claybar thread. Here's the link.

Sounds like a good deal, in the past I could only find the Mother's kit so thats what I used and it only came with the quick detailer and 1 bar of clay and cost more. I'll have to look for that Mequairs kit.

I would definitely recommend it. I went outside to see my car today in the sunlight and the red metallic flakes are back! I guess they were hidden under the 13 years of grime buildup... I'll get some pictures soon. I went and showed my Grandma (She bought the car new and drove it for 10 years before I got it) and she couldn't believe how good it looked. She said the last time it looked that good is when she bought it new.

She tells me she can't help but look at them whenever she sees me driving. ;D

i wonder if it will pull rust specks out of the paint. my car is covered in tiny rust specks in the paint. it reminds me of rail road dust when i use to detail new cars that came into the country. it's apparently from the primer ( if there is any)

I think it's part of the paint, blobs of the mica chips or something, because I have little brown spots too, especially down low. I don't think it's rust, I don't know how that would happen.

Lance's Aurora is Bright White.
I just claybared my mom's Pearl White Lexus LS430, It looks great. I haven't waxed yet, I'm doing that tomorrow morning. There were a few spots that looked like rust (really small specs) but they came off with the claybar. I doubt that they were actually rust, probably something else. The car itself looks great after the claybar, can't wait to see what it looks like after a wax!

Probably just some sort of common contaminant from the air. Collins, since you're so claybar & wax happy why don't you take a road trip up to Iowa and take care of mine?? ;D I need it done before the meet please! You're out of school for the summer now, right?

xjsman, why did you wash the car after claying it? Does the Meguiars Kit say to do that? The Griot's Garage clay system I use does not need to be washed off and leaves a smooth, shiny surface ready for wax. Just wondering if the Meguiars system leaves a residue that other clay bars don't so that's why you re-washed the car.

The Mother's claybar kit I got doesn't mention anything about washing the car after claying either, just wiping off the excess with a microfiber towel, then waxing. I can't see where it would hurt to wash it though. Been doing mine a little at a time over the past 3 days, only have the 2 bumpers left to do. Will post pics when complete.

you wash the car first, clay it, wax it, then wipe off the wax and your done. those are the steps to be taken when clay baring a car ( I should know I currently work as an auto detailer )

Was just wondering if the Meguire's stuff was different. Didn't think it would be, but was just checking. Thanks. Clayed and waxed my car last Saturday afternoon. Typically only takes me about an hour to clay the whole car (but then , my paint is in really good shape and I wash it regularly, too, so is pretty smooth to the touch to begin with). Clay has got to be the best new car care product in the last 20 years.

Well, if you're going to get THAT technical about it ... ;D After washing I used bug-n-tar removal stuff to get rid of bug splats and road deposits, especially on the mirrors, front end and lower body panels. Then I used a mild polish to buff out some surface scuffs and scratches, then clayed, then waxed. I do basically the same steps if needed in the door jambs and trunk and hood edges, too (usually they just need a cleaning and waxing). This weekend, interior detailing (I hope)! I try to detail the entire car - under the hood, too - twice a year, but the reality is I can only find time to give that kind of attention to each car about once a year. Did my wife's car a few weekends ago, and the convertible last October before putting it to sleep for the winter.

I usually clay first, polish with Griot's Machine Polish 3 then finally use Best of Show Wax, also from Griot's. It's important to get the impurities out of the paint before polishing.

That would be my suggestion as well. It's almost always a bad idea to hand polish and hand wax without claying. You're simply rubbing around the fine grit things that are on the surface of your paint, creating swirl marks, etc.
